This manuscript was chosen as the winner of a writing competition for PhD students studying at CFAR institutions. Here is what Sharleen Traynor, the winning author and a PhD student at the University of Miami, had to say about her experience in the competition:

“My participation in the AMIS Writing Competition has been a valuable experience that truly contributed to my growth as a graduate student. It allowed me to take the analytic skills I obtained during my academic training and put them into practice. It also helped me gain experience in developing a scientific manuscript and taking it through all the stages of peer-review. Furthermore, this project provided me with the opportunity to work with a large, national dataset aligned with my interests and offered me a way to contribute to the field. The AMIS team was very helpful and provided both encouragement and constructive feedback throughout the process. I am thankful for the travel award, which I will use to attend the 2017 American Public Health Association Annual Meeting in Atlanta.

Congratulations, Sharleen!
